The Importance of Technology in a Business

Technology, as defined by, is the purposeful application of information in the design, production, utilization of goods and services and in the organization of human activities. Technology has become a major portion of everyday life, not only in the business aspect of life, but our personal lives as well. The benefits of technology to a business are increased productivity, easier storage, improved sharing of information, and automation of functions.

Before the use of technology came about many businesses had to hire employees for tasks that could be easily done by a computer generated “robot”. For example, the demand for cashiers has gone down because of the use of self-checkout registers. The demand for bank tellers has decreased because of the Automated Teller Machine or ATM. Also the need for Telemarketers is decreasing because of Automated Telemarketers, who remain calm and positive even when dealing with angry customers.

There are many different types of technology: Instructional Technology, Assistive Technology, Medical Technology and Informational Technology. Informational Technology is one of the most important technologies there is in business. Informational technology, also known as IT, can be defined as the technology involving the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and networks for the processing and distribution of data. IT helps many businesses in many different ways:

  1. Rapid Communication: Communication can help increase productivity. E-mail servers (Gmail, Yahoo), chat services (Skype, FaceTime), and company sites improve communication between fellow employees and the employer. These resources can also be used to update employees or employers on what you have accomplished, and what still needs to be done.
  2. Increased Efficiency: Conjoined work systems, allocated storage, and shared work spaces can increase efficiency and allow employees to finish more work quickly.
  3. Creating Competitive Advantages: IT resources allow companies to create new products, expand their products from older markets and build upon their customer service.

IT’s main roles are to help companies improve business processes, achieve cost efficiencies, drive revenue growth and maintain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. Many companies that have outstanding IT resources are very successful. One of which would be ¬(name of business). At (name of business) they help create websites for Dentist all over the world. Ensuring that each website is functional, able to be found through a variety of search engines, accessible from any device, and is accurate and easily understood. This process isn’t easy, but because of the rapid communication, efficiency, and their competitive advantages their workload becomes a little easier.

Communication between each of the employees, clearly defined instructions, and resources that give the employees a since of direction in what they should do. None of these tasks would be easy to do without the use of technology.
Technology comes in all different shapes and forms. Technology is very essential to any business, whether it’s a franchise or a large corporation. Technology is what keeps the world and many businesses going.

-Bill Gates

“The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn’t think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.”
-Steve Ballmer
